Kedah Downhill Challenge 2011- A promising Debut

A good debut for Gerek Baru in Darulaman Downhill Challenge 2011- Malaysia Downhill Superseries 3rd legs. Gerek baru represented by Naqiyuddin aka Din Commencal in hardtail category. We believe in learning the hard way and the hardtail is our choice. Eventhough our rider clocked a dissapointed time because of crashed at rock garden, the exposure in high pace racing was valuable. You have the guts and make us proud. You started the hard way, and the rest will be easy. It is a matter of time the efforts will be realised. Hopefully next time we will be better prepared.

The Best Of 2010

Trail Category- Jamboree/ Cross Country Race
There are several nominees in this category. Among the top in the list are Perlis RUN10, Kuala Kangsar Jamboree, Kayuh Lasak 2010 and Nibong Tebal Jamboree. Of all, Gerek Baru chooses Nibong Tebal Jamboree 2010 as the best trail of the year. Nibong Tebal Jamboree truly bring the riders satisfaction to the maximum limit. There are varieties of trail profile with different harshness  level and the distance is just nice to the average level of riders. The trail is all ridable with complex combination of climbing and aggressive downhill. Nibong Tebal also attracted the highest participants ever in any jamboree in Malaysia.

Event Management Category
Wthout hesitation and with absolute consensus, Gerek Baru selects Perlis Ride Up North 2010 as the best managed event/ jamboree in 2010. The event looks almost perfect with everythings were put in its places. The choices of trail, the check point, the water station, the people manning the station, all are properly selected with riders in mind. Affordable accomodation in the hostel also provided for outstation riders. Perlis RUN10 creates a new benchmark for others to compare.

The most awaited cycling event of the year goes to UUM Bike Challenge 2010. It is known for good quality jersey, shimano prestige and lots of sponsors for lucky draw.

The Most Prominent Figure In 2010
The most prominent and highly respected figure in the cycling community especially in the North goes to Abg Ramly SP. Gerek Baru sees him as a person who can bridge the gap between different generations and also between many branches of cycling. He is consistent year by year and he commands and moves the things.

Aggressive Cross Country Forks

Recent trend in mountainbike cross country now is going for aggressive trail. There are no more simple and easy offroad ride with straight uphill or downhill. Nibong Tebal Jamboree is a good example of aggressive cross country ride. A heavy long travel trail forks might not be suitable for this kind of ride because the harsh ride only constitutes about 20% of the trail. Riders require an all rounder forks that can do all the job perfectly. The forks must be light and aggressive enough to withstand the harsh bumpy ride and can climb steadily the steep uphill.

The following are the forks that have been tested and used by Gerekbaru Team in lots of race and jamboree in Malaysia and weekly ride in the aggressive trail of Jitra.

1)Fox 32 F100 RLC FIT air spring
The most preferred forks for cross country in Malaysia. For cross country all rounder, always choose travel 100mm (travel refers to the maximum movement of cylinder compression of forks of which high travel of says 160mm used for trail/downhill ride). For Fox shock, always look for RLC FIT type because( don't be confused with the type because there are so many different FOX SHOX model in the markets) you are paying extra money for no reason for RL type without FIT damper of which the performance is about the same or less than Manitou R7 which cost less. Fox also has service centre in Malaysia. The price in Kedah/Perlis is around RM1900++ and weight around 1500Grams++.

2)Manitou R7 Absolute air spring
Light weight, stiff yet smooth and affordable cross country forks in market. Tested and proven in harsh environment. Price in Kedah/Perlis around RM1100++ and weight around 1500g.

3)SR Suntour EPICON SF-11 air spring
The most affordable air spring forks with comparable performance in market. Done its job with satisfaction on par with high priced model. Priced around RM550++ in Kedah/Perlis and weight around 1700g+-.
